MOROCCO, PHARMERGING COUNTRY
Morocco is a precursor and a visionary in the pharmaceutical industry. It was able to develop an efficient ecosystem that promotes the production of medicines and medical devices, and thus offering unprecedented opportunities for investors.
Today, the country is a pioneer in Africa thanks to its position as a relocation platform for the production of electronic equipment and devices, and to its continuously increasing figures. In 2018, it contributed by 5.2% to the industrial GDP and its turnover reached 1.6 billion dollars (~15.5 billion dirhams).

MOROCCO: AFRICAN PHARMACEUTICAL LABORATORY
Backed by its 70 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, Morocco has initiated a real dynamics with a full-scale reform of the existing regulations. This reform aimed to establish a legal framework for the bioequivalence of pharmaceutical products, and define standards and requirements for trials concerning local and imported generic medicines.
This dynamics has been combined with the development of biomedical research, the increase of drug supplies at a good price, and the improvement of logistics for the exportation of pharmaceutical products manufactured in the country.
The African continent currently produces only 3% of its drug consumption, and thus imports 95% of its needs. In this context, Morocco is considered a « real Pharmerging » as its pharmaceutical industry is in the process of making a huge breakthrough in the African market.

The whole chain value of the pharmaceutical production is covered by the following two ecosystems:
- Medicines
- Medical devices
The industrial environment is prepared to host production, research and development (R&D) activities in the pharmaceutical sector thanks to:
- A pharmaceutical production in line with European and American quality standards
- A potential to generate a trade surplus of around 790 million dollars (~7.6 billion dirhams)
- The adoption of a new medicines and pharmaceutics law providing for the liberalisation of the capital stock of pharmaceutical corporations
The sector benefits from qualified human resources who graduated from renowned Moroccan and international universities and schools.
- The ecosystems are in the process of creating 5000 new direct jobs in the sector
- A great production capacity estimated at 350 million units per 8 hour-shift
The sector benefits from cost competitiveness thanks to:
- Free trade zones and integrated industrial platforms dedicated to the pharmaceutical production
- Government support at the implementation phase
